Biography

Kate Gottgens was born in 1965 and currently lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. She graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 1987, and presented her first solo exhibition in 1993. Solo shows include: Famine at SMAC Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2016; Infinite Loop at SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2015; The Rising Sea at NUNC Contemporary in Antwerp, Belgium in 2015; Savage Nature at Espacio Liqui-do in Gijon, Spain in 2014; and Malice Aforethought at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa in 2013.

Gottgens was the only South African to be included in the Thames and Hudson’s publication, 100 Painters of Tomorrow in 2014, and in 2015, SMAC Gallery published Kate Gottgens // Paintings 2007–2015 to coincide with her review exhibition, Infinite Loop in Stellenbosch, South Africa. International art fairs include Miart in Milan, Italy, and SCOPE FAIR in Miami Beach, USA, both in 2014. Gottgens presented the inaugural show, titled The Meek, at The Vault in the Silo Hotel’s exhibition space at the Silo District in Cape Town. SMAC Gallery included Gottgens’ work in a presentation at ARTISSIMA Fair in Turin, Italy in November 2017.
